Colorado Parent and Child Rights in Special Education – Procedural Safeguards
http://www.cde.state.co.us/spedlaw/info.htmSuggested Roles and Responsibilities for Parents/Guardians – In order for parents/guardians and advocates to work together as an effective team, we suggest the following:
- The parent/guardian is the primary decision-maker and advocate for the child.
- Be specific when addressing concerns and issues, and if possible address them in a timely manner.
- Provide the Arc advocate adequate notice if you wish someone to attend a meeting with you.
- If the day and time of a meeting does not work for you, call the school to reschedule.
- Keep track of all paperwork concerning your child.
- Keep notes on concerns, questions and issues.
- Share ideas for educational goals and objectives with IEP team.
- Collaborate with your child’s team to build the best program.
- Ask questions to clarify anything that you do not understand.
- Review your child’s IEP, assessments and evaluations.
- Maintain regular contact with the special education staff and general education teachers.
- Monitor your child’s progress periodically throughout the year.
- Expect a progress report of your child’s IEP goals and objectives as often as a report card.
- If you do not receive a progress report, call your child’s special education teacher or case manager and request one. Progress reports are required by law.
- Always address questions and concerns to your child’s teacher or case manager before going up the chain of command.
- You may request a meeting if issues are not resolved through phone calls and written correspondence.
